Catalogue Note
One of Kidner's earliest paintings, the present work gives a clear indication of the European influences that were uppermost in his work at this time and was painted during his stay in Paris from 1953-55.
During this time, he intermittently attended Andre Lhote's Atelier for around six months, and was influenced in the process of flattening of pictorial space by contemporary artists such as Nicholas de Stael. This developed further on Kidner's return to England and in 1956 he moved to St.Ives where he became close to all the major practitioners.
