Condition

The panel is sound. There are a few scattered strokes of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably towards the upper left of the work, and a few flecks of infilling to the background above the soldier's head, otherwise the paint surface is in good overall condition. Held in a plaster moulded gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

This early work by Schendel can be dated to the 1830s. The poster in the background announcing a public sale ('Punlike verkoping') bears the date 1834, while the uniformed soldier is presumably on active duty in the protracted 1830-39 Belgian war of independence against the Dutch.
