Catalogue Note

The present work belongs to a group of panoramas of Spanish cities that Bossoli executed in 1858 following a commission from the Granada-born Empress Eugénie of France, wife of Napoléon III. Bossoli went to Nice to execute the views, basing them on studies he had made during a trip around Spain in 1851. In his fastidious accounts book, Bossoli noted a number of sales of 'vedute della Spagna' in 1858: eleven to 'S. M. L'Imperatrice Eugenia di Francia' (CHF 6875); four to the Marquis of Lansdowne, London (CHF 775); and seven, including views of Prussia, to Colnaghi, London (CHF 1625).
