Catalogue Note

The subject matter of such exotic chinoiserie tapestries was undertaken and individually interpreted by many of the Aubusson workshops in the eighteenth century, due to the persistent appreciation and vogue for Chinese scenes. The most famous sets, from which the subject of the present lot might have been inspired, are The Tenture Chinoise, after Boucher's cartons, Beauvais circa 1743 to 1775 and another by Dumond related to the first, woven at Aubusson, the Picon workshop, from 1755 to 1770.
