Catalogue Note

This early work is a charming example of Geoffroy's talents. The bright and light colors are fresh, and the depiction of the young artist sketching in front of the marble bust was a common nineteenth century theme.
In his later work, Geoffroy specialized in the portraiture of poor and humble young children. The artist rendered the modest and sorrows of the lives of poor Parisian children in soft and subdued colors.
