terracotta, on an ebonised wood socle
Condition
Overall the condition of the terracotta is very good. There is a crack to the reverse of the socle. There are minor chips to the flowers, There is also minor surface dirt and rubbing.

Catalogue Note
Carrier-Belleuse used the signature A. Carrier prior to 1868 (changing it to A. Carrier-Belleuse henceforth). This bust must have been modelled early in the sculptor's career. Carrier did offer a terracotta bust of a woman called Diadème at auction in 1887, however, it cannot be confirmed that he was referring to the present marble as he had more than one invention of the subject (see lot 18)
