Catalogue Note
Hargrove notes that this Fantasy Bust of Winter is closely related to the bust Carrier made of Marguerite Bellanger in the guise of Winter, examples of which are at Compiègne and Musée Carnavalet, Paris. It is a perfect example of the axis in his oeuvre between contemporary portraiture and the ideal. Carrier-Belleuse offered his terracotta bust of winter in his sales of 1883 and 1887.
