Catalogue Note

"Nothing could have been more in keeping with the taste of the Second Empire than this voluptous nymph, who reaches up to annoint a herm of Bacchus, exposing the full length of her body, like a bow strung to a pedestal" - Hargrove.

Vignon commented on the "...exuberant, femine beauty" of Carrier's marble Offrande at the 1863 Salon.  It was so well received, it won the sculptor a third class medal before it was acquired by the state.  The orginal life-size marble, which stood in the Tuileries until 1984 is now in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris (RF143).
