Condition

Overall the condition of the terracotta is very good. There are some minor chips to the tips of the laurel wreath. The surface has a light wash on its surface which is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Carrier-Belleuse offered his bust of Dante in his auction of 1887.  It is one of a series of portraits executed by Carrier of famous artists, writers and politicians.  Hargrove refers to this group of portraiture as his fantasy busts
