Catalogue Note

Carrier-Belleuse sought inspiration in the work of Jean Goujon and the French Renaissance for many of his decorative designs. The present bust illustrates his use of Renaissance - derived motifs for his fantasy busts, which were eagerly acquired by the haute-bourgeoisie for domestic decoration. Carrier-Belleuse executed a series of busts of woman with elaborate diadems in their hair, including lot no. 39 and hist portrait of Marguerite (Hargrove pl. 75).  A bust called Diademe was offered in his sale of 1887.
