Catalogue Note

The present model is a reduced version of a figure from Bartholomé's Monuments au Morts erected in the Père Lachaise cemetery, Paris. Although primarily a painter, Bartholomé took up sculpture after the death of his wife in 1887. The monument occupied Bartolomé completely from 1889 to 1899 and on the day of its inauguration it was visited by some 98,000 people. He created various partial studies of the monument separately cast in bronze. Another cast of the present model is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
