Catalogue Note

When Bartlett asked Frémiet if he had foreseen the popularity of Joan of Arc he replied: `No, though I thought some would like it, but I was in despair when the public so generally cursed it. When it began to be appreciated, and the small copies commenced, I felt comforted'. By 1891, the sculptor presumably also felt somewhat richer, because the small copies began to be highly sought after.

The history of the statue, which today stands in the Place des Pyramides, Paris, reflects the struggle, determination and eventual reward of so many of Frémiet's public commissions. Although initially the design provoked much bitter criticism, it was generally admired by his fellow artists, including in particular his close friend Gérôme.
