Catalogue Note
The vital naturalism of Carrier Belleuse's portraiture evolved from eighteenth-century terracotta portraits into his own display of an innovative technical freedom. Carrier's use of a wet sponge, spontaneous modelling and fine tooling are well defined in his portraits of famous historical figures. The layered design of Mozart's costume creates an almost graphic sense of line and depth characteristic of the sculptor.
Carrier-Belleuse portrayed over a hundred sitters throughout his career. The majority of them were contemporary and historical artists, actors, writers and politicians. Carrier-Belleuse offered his portrait of Mozart at his sales of 1883 and 1887 along with his portrait of Beethoven (lot 12).
