Catalogue Note

The Antwerp born painter Peter Jacob Horemans, studied under his brother Jan Josef Horemans, before leaving and settling in Munich by the age of 25, where he stayed until his death in 1776. During this period he received several commissions of the electors of Bavaria, but was not appointed court painter until 1769. In the Munich high society he was much wanted for his elegant genre scenes, depicting hunting, musical or other type parties, often portraying the Bavarian nobility, as may probably also be the case in this and the next two lots.  The action often takes place on a terrace of  a classical stage-like architecture decorated with sculptures, based on plaster studio models and which constantly re-appear in his paintings, such as the lion in the Successful Hunt, which can also be seen in a Garden Scene with Musical Party, dated 16(3)6, in the Städtische Galerie, Munich (inv. no. 605).
