Catalogue Note

Executed in 1965.
Inspired specifically by the landscape of the north and north-west of Ireland, Flanagan has become renowned for his atmostpheric treatment of the Irish countryside.  The fluid forms and subtle tones of Black Wood are typical of the style he developed in the 1960s and it was with his friend Seamus Heaney that he discovered a great fascination with and metaphorical significance in the Irish bog landscape. As a result, Heaney’s poem Boglands (1969) was dedicated to the artist.

Born in Enniskillen, Flanagan studied at the Belfast College of Art and began teaching at St Mary's College of Education where he remained for 28 years.  He has had numerous solo exhibitions including a retrospecitve of work from 1967-77 organised by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland in 1977 as well as exhibitions at CEMA, Belfast; The Hendriks Gallery, Dublin and The Tom Caldwell Gallery, Dublin and Belfast. His work is represented in public collections such as The Ulster Museum, Belfast; the Collections of the Irish and Northern Irish Arts Councils; The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin and the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.
