George Campbell, R.H.A. 1917-1974

As well as the landscapes and people of Spain, the dramatic yet peaceful Connemara coastline also became one of Campbell's favourite subjects. He painted there in the 1940s and 1950s with his friend, the artist Gerard Dillon and they were particularly fond of the village of Roundstone set against the backdrop of the Twelve Pin mountains on one side and the Island of Inish Lacken and the sea on the other.  The dynamic and verging on abstract depiction of the village in the present work is typical of Campbell's individual style that has earned his reputation as one of Ireland's foremost artists.
