Executed circa 1980.
During the 1960s, the artist moved to Dun Laoghaire and without easy access to the rural landscape that had previously made up most of his subject matter, he began to focus on everyday objects such as toilet roll, hats, envelopes and tickets. The present work takes on a greater significance in immortalising Brady's own tools; an enduring symbol of his life career.
Born in New York, Brady studied at the Arts Students League and became part of the Post-War movement of Abstract Expressionism before moving to Ireland in 1959 in search of a less frenetic lifestyle. He has exhibited extensively at galleries such as The Taylor Galleries, Dublin; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Caldwell Gallery, Belfast and was the subject of a major retrospective at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 2001. He was a founding member of Aosdána and is represented in numerous public collections including those of the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; The Ulster Museum, Belfast and the Irish Arts Council.
