Catalogue Note
A menhir is a large, single standing stone of pre-historic European origin. The word menhir was adopted, via French, by 19th century archaeologists on the basis of the words in the Breton language meaning 'long stone'. Also referred to as Cloch Fháda, they have long been associated with religion, spirituality, legend, power and witchcraft in Ireland, and they are regarded as rich remnants of a Celtic history.
