Catalogue Note

Eleven portraits by Mytens of sitters in the guise of Diana are known, all of very similar format and costume.  Only two of the sitters can be identified: Albertine Agnes van Oranje-Nassau, Fürstin van Nassau-Diez (Netherlands, private collection), and Maria van Oranje-Nassau, Herzogin von Simmern (whereabouts unknown). Nina Bauer dates the present work to 1660-1665, in line with the other eleven portraits of this type (see Literature).  The present work is closest in execution and pose to that at Elton Hall, Peterborough (see A.N. Bauer, op. cit., p. 193, cat. no. A51, reproduced).
