Catalogue Note

In the wake of Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer, Delff is part of a second generation of kitchen still life painters. He painted these compositions around the first decade of the 17th century, adding to the still life a background scene, in this case both referring to the pleasures and leisures of life. A similar composition is at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond (see S.A. Sullivan, The Dutch Gamepiece, Totowa, New Jersey, 1984, p. 11, reproduced fig. 11).
