Catalogue Note
The present work is characteristic of Schotanus, who often used the celestial globe, the hourglass and dead game in his still lifes. These works can have a strong moralizing character, given the biblical texts on the painted documents, of which, according to Sullivan (see Literature: pp. 75/6), the top lines can be identified as a selection from Psalm 10.
