Description
- Thomas Buttersworth
- Men-of-war off Portsmouth harbour
indistinctly signed l.r.: T Buttersworth
- oil on canvas
- 46 by 61 cm.; 18 by 24 in.
Condition
The canvas has been lined. There are small patches of craquelure and slight paint separation, but otherwise in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals evidence of a restored tear in the upper right hand corner of the sky in the shape of an inverted 'L'. There is also evidence of minor restored damage to the upper left hand corner. The work would appear to have been done well and is only visible under a strong light. There is evidence of some re-touching along the lower edge, but varnish prevents further analysis.
FRAME
Held in a gilt composite frame.
