Catalogue Note

Voluptuous female figures appear frequently in Keyt's paintings, but his evident delight in the female form was inspired, at least in part, by classical Hindu myth and sculpture. Beyond these indigenous artistic traditions Keyt was also influenced by Cubism but his style was not merely an adoption of western art movements instead his paintings became a search for a unique type of modernism in which he created his own rules of composition, '...symmetry is not essential to my work, nor concealment, nor softness even: but curvature is, and roundness is, and if I must dislocate and rearrange my forms the rearrangement must itself be in curves.'  (Dissanayake, 1993.)
