Catalogue Note

Sui Jianguo began creating his rigid, hollow "Mao jackets" in the mid-1990s, in sizes ranging from two feet to twelve feet high. While earlier editions used duller shades of gray, the present variation turns from the critique of conformity implicit in the rougher, monochromatic works to a meditation on the bright colors and smooth surfaces of China's thriving commercial culture.
