Condition
A condition report by Simon Parkes for this lot (created May 18, 2006) reads as follows:
This painting has been lined wth glue and the heavily painted surface is stable. Peto seems to have either changed the position of these elements quite radically, or he has painted over a completely different picture. There are visible shapes and pentiments in the paint layer which are interesting and not visually disturbing.
The restorations are focused primarily in the right background beyond the pewter tray, and these retouches seem to address some of these above mentioned pentimenti. This portion of the wall is now peculiarly simple with little texture. Presumably, there are shadows or shapes of these previous arrangements which were subsequently painted out by the artist. In our opinoin, all of these restorations should be re-examined. Overall, the picture is in good condition with good potential for improvement.
