Catalogue Note

Springer painted this wonderful watercolour in 1876, at the height of his career. He visited the town of Hoorn on several occasions. The first time took place in September 1872, when he made several drawings of picturesque buildings like the city hall, the Doelen and the Oosterpoort. The following years Springer returned several times to Hoorn and painted about 15 town views. The present lot can be compared to an oil painting of the same subject, dated 1875, sold in these rooms on 26 October 1998, lot 184 (illustrated).
