The present painting has been seen in the original by Dottssa. Annalisa Scarpa Sonino who confirms the attribution and will be including it in her forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné.

The sumptuous costumes and heavy silk curtain are characteristic of Ricci’s Venetian love of finery.  The classical subject-matter is emphasized by the carved marble urn, and by the figure in the background, whose pose is reminiscent of the celebrated Dying Gladiator.
