A rare pair of Meissen figures of a Capucine Monk and a Benedictine Nun circa 1741

- traces of blue crossed swords mark to base of monk, collector's mark C.g. in ink to both, traces of inventory number 7093 in ink
- 26cm., 10 1/4 in. and 24cm., 9 3/8 in.
Catalogue Note
Similar models are illustrated by R. Rückert, Meissener Porzellan, nos.908 (the monk) and 975 (the nun). Kändler's work notes of January 1741 record that both models were created for General Field Marshall Count Burchard Christoph von Münich: "Annoch einen neuen Mönch, welcher in Schwarzer Kleidung bestellet angefangen, welcher ebenfalls für des Herrn Generals de Münchs Excell. bestellt worden, woran aber noch etwas zu thun übrig blieben. [a new monk begun which was ordered in black clothes, which was also ordered for the General de Münchs. Excellency, but for which there remained something to do]. Eine Benedictiner Nonne betend vorgestellt, einer halben Elle hoch; es stehet solche auf einem zierlichen Postament in ihrer gehörigen Kleidung aufs beste aus poußiret für den Herrn General de Münch Excellenz [a Benedictine nun depicted in prayer, half an elle high, it stands on a decorative pedestal in her appropriate clothes well finished for the General de Münch Excellency]; quoted by Rückert, op,cit.
