4to (12  1/2  x 9  3/4  in.; 313 x 245 mm).  Title-page vignette and several text illustrations, 55 handcolored lithographed plates after J. G. Keulemans; title with some foxing, light foxing on a few other leaves.  Half red morocco, gilt-lettered spine, buckram covers, top edges gilt; some wear at extremities.

Catalogue Note

First edition.  Sclater was well known for his active participation in the affairs of the Zoological Society of London, of which he was secretary for forty-three years.  He was one of the founders and longtime editors of the Ibis.
