Catalogue Note

This marble may be identifiable with A Sleeping Infant exhibited by Mary Thornycroft at the Royal Academy in 1836. She was then known as Miss Mary Francis and was just 21 years old. She exhibited there the previous year for the first time and was widely considered a child prodigy, having learnt her craft in her father, John Francis' studio. She went on exhibiting until 1877 and married the sculptor Thomas Thornycroft in 1840.  Their son was the more famous Sir William Hamo Thornycroft (1850-1925).
