Catalogue Note

The present pastel is most likely a portrait of Thomas Pitt of St James's, Westminster (d.1832) who married Anne Maria Legh, daughter of Henry Cornwall Legh of Cheshire (whose portrait by Russell was sold at Christie's on 6th March 1979, lot 98).  With him is his son, William, one of the two sons of Thomas Pitt who Russell drew in 1804 and whose portrait he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1804, no.423 (sold at Christie's 19th June 1979, lot 88).  William Pitt was killed in the sortie at Bayonne in 1814
