Catalogue Note

The image offered here is one of a series of poses made by Horst for American Vogue in 1937, a sitting that produced the portraits Chanel described as her favorites (for other images from this sitting, see Salute to the Thirties, pl. 72, and Horst: Sixty Years, pl. 2)

Bettina McNulty worked in New York for American Vogue in the 1940s, then moved to Paris in the 1950s, where she worked in fashion publicity.  In connection with her work for a fabrics manufacturer, McNulty became acquainted with Chanel, who gave her a suit from the Chanel collection and fitted it herself on McNulty.  The print offered here was given to McNulty by Chanel.  In 1961, McNulty moved to London, where she became a close friend of the photographer Lee Miller.  McNulty continued her career in London as a contributing editor for both British Vogue and American House & Garden magazines.
