Catalogue Note

Peter Lik was born in Melbourne in 1959, the son of Czech immigrant parents. He began taking photographs as a child and is entirely self-taught. He initially sold his images to companies for reproduction on postcards, but, disillusioned by a lack of control over the publication of his own imagery, he decided to self-publish. It was in 1994 on a trip to Alaska that he discovered the panoramic format that has been his trademark ever since. Lik now has five galleries dedicated to his photography, four in Australia and one in Hawaii. He has won numerous professional awards, including two in 2000 from the Australian Institute of Professional Photography for 'The Jetty'.

He says of this photograph: 'I will never forget this particular morning, sitting on the sands of Hervey Bay in front of this weather worn timber jetty. The endless ocean stretched out before me, and the pastel hues of a sunrise palette cast their glows over the horizon. The simplicity and tranquillity of this image conveys exactly how I felt at the time.'
