Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dr. Perez Sanchez, who on the basis of photographs, confirmed that this painting is from the studio of Velázquez, painted in the second half of the 17th century.

The prime version of this equestrian portrait of Balthasar Carlos is in the Prado Museum, Madrid. It  was painted by Velázquez in 1634-35 on a slightly larger scale for the Palacio Real del Buen Retiro, Madrid.
