Catalogue Note
Both of the Harnetts from the Whitney collection depict the New York Herald, which merged with the New York Tribune in 1922 to form the New York Herald Tribune of which Mr. Whitney was Editor-in-Chief and Publisher from 1961-1966. Mr. Whitney purchased Still Life with Mug, Pipe and New York Herald (New York Herald, March 10, 1880) in 1958, the year he acquired the newspaper. New York Herald, January 9, 1880 was a Christmas gift from Mrs. Whitney to her husband in 1961, the year he became Editor-in-Chief and Publisher. Mr. Whitney was subsequently Chairman of the International Herald Tribune from 1966 until his death in 1982.
