Catalogue Note
The sitter was born at Kingswells, near Aberdeen, into a prominent Quaker family, the youngest son of Alexander Jaffray, by his wife, Christian, daughter of Robert Barclay of Ury. He went to Kingston, Jamaica, where he married and had three children. On stylistic grounds Mannings dates this work circa 1759.
