Catalogue Note
The sitter was educated at Trinity College, Oxford, before entering Lincoln's Inn and being called to the Bar in 1713. He was knighted in 1734 and became Attorney-General the same year and Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in 1737. He married Margaret Brewster from Worcestershire and they had four sons and four daughters.
