Catalogue Note

This drawing relates closest to lot 1 of the present group in its fluid use of ink and wash, but with the addition of a minimal amount of white chalk which adds detail. It is also likely to date from the late 1770s. The motif of a cottage in a wooded landscape is common in Gainsborough's work from this period (see Hayes, op.cit., nos. 474, 477 and 478)
