The present sofa closely relates to a group of designs illustrated in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director, including a French chair op.cit.., 1754, pl.xx, and a group of sofas op.cit., 1763, pls.XXIX and XXX. A further related design for a sofa is illustrated in William Ince and John Mayhew's Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762, pl.LXXII.
