Glamour to Grit: Spotlight on Fashion Photography

This year marks the centenary of Robert Frank’s birth in November 1924 and celebrates an influential career marked by incisive documentation. Sotheby’s is pleased to offer a selection of exemplary works.

100 Years of Robert Frank

The International Center of Photography was founded in 1974 by Cornell Capa to champion what he called ‘Concerned Photography,’ or images that can educate or even change the world. Capa (brother of photojournalist Robert Capa) was a photographer himself who had a long and distinguished career. In 1966, he created the International Fund for Concerned Photography, and by the 1970s was looking for a permanent home for the organization. This year, the International Center of Photography (ICP) celebrates its 50th anniversary. Since its founding, ICP has presented more than 700 exhibitions, taught thousands of classes and hosted a wide variety of public programs. Through lectures, publications, educational curriculum, exhibitions, and annual Infinity Awards, this integral organization continues to reach the public to enhance an understanding and appreciation of humanistic photography. The Concerned Photographer, a volume featuring the work of 6 photographers championed by Cornell Capa, was published in 1968 by International Center of Photography. A second volume, The Concerned Photographer 2, was published shortly thereafter in 1972 and included works by 8 photographers. These books are representative of the spirit and mission of the organization.
