Auction Highlights

From the start of his collecting in the 1970s, the late Dr Ernst Boehlen had the rare good fortune to build a pre-eminent collection of art from the Middle Ages. The works of art in the present auction demonstrate Dr Boehlen’s collector’s eye for the truly exceptional. They are led by a beautiful and large 13th-century Limoges Processional Cross, which was formerly in the Prussian Royal collection and is an outstanding example of its kind, and a rare Leopard Aquamanile. Further works from Dr Boehlen’s collection will be offered by Sotheby’s in New York in February 2025.

A Selection from the collection of Bernard Descheemaeker Works of Art, Antwerp

We are delighted to announce our annual Master Sculpture auction in Paris on 22 November, which will be entirely dedicated to European Sculpture and Works of Art, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Featuring a wide variety of materials and techniques in three dimensions, the auction presents an opportunity to discover fresh-to-the-market works in bronze, terracotta and marble, as well as Limoges enamels, ivories and majolica. For the Haute Epoque, the sale will offer a fine selection from the Antwerp collection of Bernard Descheemaeker, featuring wood sculpture, as well as Limoges champlevé and painted enamels from 16th century. This ensemble will be completed by a rare 12th-century Mosan bronze depicting an Evangelist writing at his desk (Oettingen Wallerstein collections), as well as an exceptional Apostle's head in pink sandstone executed in the Haut-Rhin region, probably Strasbourg, circa 1280–1300. For the Renaissance and Baroque period, the sale will offer a fine coherent ensemble as Italian majolica, as well as a good selection of French and Italian bronzes featuring some of the great names of European sculptors: such as Severo da Ravenna, Robert Le Lorrain, Laurent Delvaux, Jean-Baptiste II Lemoyne and Gilles-Lambert Godecharle. Finally, our sale will conclude with an important rediscovery: the original life-size marble of Narcissus looking at himself in the water, sculpted in 1817 by Pierre-Nicolas Beauvallet destinated to the Queen's Dairy at the Rambouillet château.
