Sotheby’s is honored to be offering five works this season from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They are predominantly British portraits led by the enchanting Portrait of Nancy Horton by Sir Joshua Reynolds. The group also features a lovely pastoral scene, Nymph and Shepherd,&nbsp; by German-born painter Johann Liss.

This year’s Master Paintings Part I is headlined by several Spanish paintings, including a newly discovered early El Greco; a lush still life by Luis Meléndez; and works by Jusepe de Ribera, and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. The sale also offers a particularly rich assortment of early Italian gold-ground paintings by artists including Nardo di Cione, and Lo Scheggia. Other works of note include a fresh-to-market Gustav Bauernfeind and two rediscovered self-portraits by Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, bringing these two titans of Northern Baroque art into direct dialogue. Sotheby’s is also honored to offer a group of five British and Italian works recently deaccessioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and being sold to benefit the Acquisition Fund.
