Sotheby’s New York is pleased to present our Important Watches auction, to be held on Wednesday June 5 2024 at 9am. Among its highlights is a selection of watches from the personal Collection of Sylvester Stallone including the revered Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime – the first 6300G to ever appear at auction. The flagship sale also celebrates the best of both vintage and modern watches, like the Patek Philippe 2499, Patek Philippe 1436 ‘Pink on Pink’, and the Patek Philippe 5374G marking the first time the reference has ever appeared at auction. Alongside his Grandmaster Chime, Stallone is also offering the Panerai ‘Bronzo’ worn throughout The Expendables 2 and the widely sought after Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 with ‘olive green’ dial and baguette diamond-set bezel. Provenance pieces also include a unique Audemars Piguet Royal Oak that was commissioned by Bruno Mars and a 1917 Cartier belonging to General John J. Pershing. Sale Number: N11527

Sylvester Stallone on Why He's Selling His Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime & More

Sylvester Stallone is known for many things. To some he is a legendary Academy Award winning director, actor, writer, and producer – and to others he is Rocky Balboa or John Rambo. At Sotheby’s, it is our distinct joy to introduce you to Sylvester Stallone, the passionate watch collector. The following watches, assembled over decades of collecting, come with unique personal stories and highlight special moments of his historic career. The undisputed highlight is Stallone’s Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime - the most complicated wristwatch made by the brand. Widely considered a ‘holy grail’ amongst the watch community, Sly’s Grandmaster Chime is further distinguished as the first example to ever appear at auction* – and the culmination of a long, enduring passion for Patek Philippe. Lavishly presented, Stallone’s Grandmaster Chime 6300G010 has Sly’s name engraved onto the Patek Philippe box, and its various original books and certificate. As he stated, “I bought this as a collector, I didn’t want to wear it around. I thought this is the way you would treat a Monet, a work of art. It’s a real sense of accomplishment owning this”. While the Grandmaster Chime stands alone, a pair of 5711 Nautilus’s from his collection is also offered – which includes the highly sought-after ‘olive-green’ 5711/1300A001 with a baguette diamond-set bezel that was introduced as a ‘send-off’ to the stainless steel 5711 reference. In addition, Stallone’s association and affinity for Panerai is well-known, and we are thrilled to offer some of his most interesting models from the brand that he essentially helped launch in the 1990s. His screen-used Panerai ‘Bronzo’ from “The Expendables 2” shows the age and patina of its extreme use during the filming of that action-packed motion picture. The ‘Bronzo’ is further distinguished by being watch 0000/1000 – suggesting it is perhaps a prototype, or the first ever produced. As a ‘thank you’ to Stallone for his dedication to the brand, Panerai produced a ‘piece unique’ watch and reference for him. The watch was the PAM269, an 18K yellow gold Luminor chronograph ‘Slytech’. Engraved on the case back as ‘Esemplare Unico’ and ‘Special Edition for Sly’, it is a rarely-seen watch that Sly has proudly worn and kept since its production in 2006. Along with some of his Pateks and Panerais, Sylvester Stallone’s collection is also represented by a rose gold 50th Anniversary Royal Oak Tourbillon, an engraved rose gold Day-Date, and engraved yellow gold Cartier Pasha, among others. “The one thing that is pervasive throughout all these watches, is that they attract me emotionally. It’s not about keeping time, it’s about keeping in step with where you are in life” Stallone remarks. Eleven watches, spanning over two decades, Sotheby’s proudly presents this glimpse into the heart of an icon and true collector - Mr. Sylvester ‘Sly’ Stallone. *A Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime sold in a charity auction for CHF 31 million (Only Watch, November 2019). The piece was created especially for the charity auction, and no other Grandmaster Chime has appeared on the auction market.
