Sotheby’s is pleased to present the 19th-Century European Paintings &amp; Works of Art spring sale, featuring An Independent Eye: Property from Jack Kilgore &amp; Co–a celebration of works assembled by the astute collector, dealer, and connoisseur, Jack Kilgore that range from Belgian Symbolism to fin-de-siècle Paris and Swiss Modernism. Highlights include a monumental portrait of Sarah Bernhardt by Georges Clairin, an arresting self-portrait by Antonio Mancini, Roman ruins at twilight by Ferdinand Knab, and a frieze-like symphony of rural industry by Bernard Boutet de Monvel. Priced to sell, these eccentric but exquisite works represent a lifetime of looking beyond the canon. In addition to more avant-garde material, we are proud to offer works by leading Academic artists that dominated official government-sponsored exhibitions of 19th-Century Europe, including several full-length figure paintings by William Bouguereau, a rediscovered painting by Solomon Hart, and Barbizon landscapes by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jules Breton, and Léon Lhermitte.
