Sotheby’s is thrilled to present On the Edge: Five Decades of American Minimalism a collection of 12 works from an esteemed private collection. The collection is anchored by Dan Flavin’s The Diagonal of May 25, 1963, the artist’s first fluorescent light work, as well as exceptional examples by Craig Kauffman, Anne Truitt, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, John McCracken and Fred Sandback.

Highlights include 18 exceptional works from the Collection of legendary record executive Mo Ostin, works from the Collection of Jan and Maria Manetti Shrem including top examples of outdoor sculpture as well as works from the Collection of Frances Wells Magee. The Contemporary Day Auction will also feature exceptional examples by many of the most critically acclaimed artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Contemporary Day Auction

This meticulously selected collection showcases the works of four leading artists who are pushing the boundaries of contemporary algorithmic art. This selection features a rich variety of algorithmic artworks that draw inspiration from the conceptual art and minimalism of the 1960s. From Tyler Hobbs' mesmerizing iconic Fidenza project; Dmitri Cherniak's striking Ringers which is inspired by the 1960s Graphic Design Manual by Armin Hoffman and Brazilian artist Ygia Pape's Livro do Tempo; to Matt Hall and John Watkinson's Autoglyph. Influenced by Sol Le Witt’s wall drawings, the Autoglyphs are instructional, code-based generative art. Hall and Watkinson, inspired and humbled by the vast ground covered in digital art during the early 60s and early 70s, embraced the aesthetic of early generative art to produce similar results with a blockchain foundation. Overall, this selection represents a fascinating exploration of the intersection of art and technology, and offers a unique perspective on the potential of algorithmic art to push the boundaries of creativity in the digital age.
