Born in Leipzig, Germany in 1970, Norbert Bisky is celebrated as one of the most distinguished German painters of his generation. As one of the foremost practicioners of contemporary figurative painting, his work draws from personal encounters with terror, extensive travels to Brazil, and the pervasive influence of media to create vivid, color-saturated compositions exploring themes of beauty, sexuality, violence, and decay. In Germany, he is celebrated as one of the most distinguished painters of his generation.
Bisky studied at the Berlin and Madrid University of the Arts and is one of the most successful representatives of contemporary figurative painting. The artist translates personal experiences of terror, journeys to Brazil, and influences from the media world into color-intensive scenes of beauty, sexuality, violence, and destruction. In Germany, Norbert Bisky is one of the most renowned painters of his generation.
Bisky's works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including notable venues such as the G2 Kunsthalle in Leipzig, Germany (2021), the Kunstmuseum Bern in Switzerland (2017), Haus am Waldsee in Berlin, Germany (2017), and the Latvian National Museum of Art in Riga, Latvia (2016). His pieces are also housed in prominent public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA; Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany; National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea; and The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Israel, among others. Bisky has contributed to the academic sphere as a visiting professor at the Geneva Art Academy HEAD from 2008 to 2010 and at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Braunschweig from 2016 to 2018. In 2013, he designed the stage for the Berlin State Ballet's performance "Masse." Bisky currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany and Andalusia, Spain.
