Jadé Fadojutimi Biography
Jadé Fadojutimi’s large-scale paintings combine abstract and figurative elements in compositions that have intense graphic energy. At the heart of Fadojutimi’s work is an introspective mining of facets of her own identity and the social and cultural environments that shape them. Emotions and pigments are equally in flux in her work, and together they convey a deeper sense of self through vivid brush strokes and countless colors. The sensation of fluctuating feelings is expressed in her energetic brushstrokes, where the colors reveal a search for self-knowledge. Fadojutimi refers to her paintings as “emotional landscapes” in which she questions everyday experiences, memories and self-knowledge. Her interrogation of the relationship between herself and her surroundings is simultaneously a feast for the eye and an act of resistance.
Born in 1993, Fadojutimi studied at The Slade School of Fine Art and Royal College of Art in London, where she still lives and works. In 2021, Fadojutimi was selected to participate in the Liverpool Biennial, and soon after, was featured in the 2022 Venice Biennale. Her work is included in numerous institutional collections, including Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Tate London, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Baltimore Museum of Art, Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; and The Hepworth Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Rather than objects to view from a distance, Fadojutimi’s paintings become places or moments for the viewer to exist within and alongside.
