Art Zelin Biography
Brooklyn-born Art Zelin (1941 – 2016) is known for their unique paparazzi photography. A New York City native, he attended the New York Institute of Photography, studying black and white and darkroom photography. However, Zelin truly got their start in the New York club scene, appearing as a regular at legendary establishments including Studio 54 and Paramount Theater. Known for their friendly demeanor, Zelin was able to befriend celebrity subjects for their portfolio of pop art candid shots. Their photos of The Beatles, the Kennedys, and David Bowie, for example, frequently landed his work in Life Magazine. Zelin’s work captured the most desirable people and places of the 60s and 70s and helped begin a tradition of nightlife photography still present in New York City.
