Anna Weyant Biography
Born in Calgary, Alberta and now based in New York City, Weyant paints still lifes and portraits of young women that simultaneously infuse playful humor with somber tragedy. Drawing from influences that range from Dutch Golden Age painters to contemporary movies, novels, and children books, Weyant’s paintings depict charming yet mysterious characters in tragicomic situations that shed light on the idiosyncrasies of social convention and, in particular, the coded rituals of femininity. With her signature muted palette, Weyant also paints still lifes of objects in distinctly uncanny and ominous overtones. Weyant received her BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2017 and has studied painting at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Now based in New York, Weyant is the youngest artist to be represented by Gagosian Gallery, and she has been the subject of impressive group shows in Europe, Asia, and both West and East Coasts, including at FLAG Foundation, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas.
