T he Luxury Sales at Sotheby’s New York are anchored this year by a collection of watches and game-worn sports memorabilia spanning Tom Brady’s historic NFL career. With the sales on view in Sotheby’s galleries December 5-10, Brady was given a preview of the incredible books, wine, watches, jewels, handbags, sneakers and fashion items coming to auction. Here are some of his favorites.
“I’ve always loved Maurice Sendak’s art because it takes me back to when I would read ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to my kids. These will always be some of my favorite memories.”
“This is a charming original work produced by the most important children’s-book artists of the 20th century, Maurice Sendak,” says Ella Hall, an AVP Specialist of Books & Manuscripts at Sotheby’s. “It features one of his most iconic subjects, the Wild Things, set against a striking New York cityscape.” Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are, designed this poster for an annual book fair that ran for three decades, from 1979-2010. Each year, the nonprofit organizers invited a new artist to design the poster, and Sendak drew this image of a Wild Thing clutching the Empire State Building with Charlotte Brönte’s Villette in hand for the event’s inaugural year. Subsequent artists included Edward Gorey, Charles Schulz, Richard Scarry and Keith Haring.
“The craftsmanship and classic style are timeless. It’s a perfect mix of luxury and practicality, proving that classic pieces can stay stylish and useful for a long period of time.”
Louis Vuitton has a long history of making quality luggage, but this trunk was owned by none other than Louise Whitfield Carnegie, a prominent philanthropist alongside her husband, Andrew Carnegie. Stickers on the trunk attest to Mrs. Carnegie’s international travels, including on the White Star Line 1st Class to New York, Hotel Meurice Paris, Liverpool and South Eastern and Chatham Railway in England. In the 1970s, Carnegie gifted this trunk, which bears her initials, L.W.C, to a prominent New York institution – one of a number of the philanthropist’s objects to enter a museum, including a Herman Rossberg dress now held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“I’ve always had deep appreciation for vintage Patek Philippe wristwatches. The 1518 is special because it was the first perpetual calendar chronograph produced in series. Its design and historical importance make it a true classic.”
Brady is an avid watch collector and is offering a slice of his own watches during The Luxury Sales – including several like those he’s selected here. Brady has been known to wear watches similar to these, including boldly colored Patek Philippe Nautiluses and highly complicated perpetual calendars.
“The Patek Philippe reference 3450 is also one of my favorites, blending a vintage design with a more modern look,” he says. “It includes a leap-year indicator with the perpetual calendar, showcasing its timeless style. Owning these watches feels like having a piece of history while also honoring Patek Philippe’s commitment to precision and design.”
“The F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance ‘Black Label’ is an incredible watch that combines innovation with design.”
Brady’s watch collection is known to contain a special-edition F.P. Journe or two – unsurprising given the quarterback’s love for high watchmaking. “What I love most about it is the unique resonance system, which allows the two movements to operate in sync and results in incredible accuracy,” he says. “The ‘Black Label’ version has a sophisticated look and adds a sense of exclusivity that is truly special. It’s not just a watch; but a real masterpiece that you don’t see very often.”
